Reverse-Pull Headgear

Fix your underbite while you sleep

Correct an underbite without surgery using a nighttime appliance

Reverse-pull headgear is an orthodontic appliance used in growing patients to correct an underbite and help the upper jaw develop. The appliance is worn at nighttime only (we are not that cruel!) and enhances growth of the upper jaw by pulling the jaw forward. Our orthodontist will teach you how to use the appliance, including how often to wear it and what to expect. Generally, patients will be asked to wear the appliance at least 16 hours per day for ideal results. Treatment time ranges from 12 to 14 months depending on the severity of the bite and the rate of skeletal growth. If used effectively, the reverse-pull headgear can prevent the need for complicated orthodontics down the road, and avoid the need for jaw surgery in some cases.

We encourage you to use your reverse-pull headgear consistently and as directed so that you can achieve the best possible results. Some general guidelines you should follow include:

  • When removing your headgear, be careful to avoid injury to your lips and cheeks and prevent damage to your appliance.
  • Never remove your headgear before the straps are disconnected.
  • Do not lift your headgear over your face.
  • Never wear your headgear while playing sports.

Please bring your headgear with you to every appointment with Dr. Kirby Nelson. This will help us determine how you can wear your headgear more effectively and will make it easier for us to answer any questions you may have.
